IMMUNE
SYSTEM
The Immune System
is an amazing, complicated mechanism that protects the body from potentially
dangerous organisms and harmful substances. Bacteria, viruses and other
pathogens are disabled, killed or rendered harmless and eliminated - Usually,
totally unnoticed.
Some pathogens, however, occasionally "slip the net" resulting
in disease or infection. The immune system quickly reacts, identifies
the offender and rids the body of the pathogen.
A
healthy immune system is vitally important. Good nutrition, exercise
and lifestyle including low stress levels all make an important contribution.
When called into elevated action, say, through a viral infection,
the immune system mechanism uses all available appropriate resources
- Silver is one of these.
Biochemists and researchers have shown that
low silver levels in the body equate to poor health.
Supplementing with Colloidal Silver is described as "Having a
second immune system".
The powerful antibacterial, anti-viral properties exhibited by silver,
especially in ionic form, eases the load off the immune system allowing
it to act faster and more efficiently - therefore, helping the Immune
System to perform its task. Yet, Colloidal Silver is harmless to human
cells and tissue. |
The First line
of defence.
The most obvious part of the immune system, the skin, is an important
part of the immune system. Part of the skin's job is to act as a barrier
to infection causing bacteria and viruses. The epidermis contains special
cells called Langerhans cells that are an important early-warning component
in the immune system. The skin also secretes antibacterial substances
- most bacteria and spores that land on the skin die quickly.
The nose, mouth and eyes are also obvious points of entry for germs. Tears
and mucus contain an enzyme that breaks down the cell wall of many bacteria.
Saliva is also antibacterial. Since the nasal passage and lungs are coated
in mucus, many germs trapped in the mucus are soon swallowed.
Internal defence
mechanism.
Once inside the body, the Lymphatic system, White blood cells, Bone marrow,
Thymus, Spleen, Antibodies, Complementary system and Hormones deal with
an invading organism on a different level. Fighting infection by working
together, they identify, mark and destroy viruses, bacteria, dead cells
and other unwanted matter.
The fascinating interrelational complexity of the immune system is beyond
the scope of a single page - a short description would not be adequate.
A good Biology book or searching the Internet for the many dedicated sites
is recommended!
These are a couple of good sites:
The
excellent BBC website - Non commercial, comprehensive health section.
"How
stuff works" - Information on many subjects.
